Learning Commons

Nicole Sowman —

Earlier this year we succeeded in making a massive transition from our temporary library space to our amazing new building and the innovative Learning Commons. The Learning Commons has a variety of spaces that encourage creativity, reading, collaboration, entertainment and social engagement.

Utilising the space has been very popular with all year groups since the opening. Adjacent to the Café, it is a constant hive of activity during interval and lunch times.

The Learning Commons space is not just used for issuing books, but also for Hui, school events and entertainment, Uru Manuka after school club, Passion Projects, staff PD and camaraderie. The Learning Commons can easily accommodate 3 classes at one time and provides wonderful break out spaces for students to engage in work.

Student Librarians have coordinated eye-catching displays on themes and topical issues such as sustainability and new release books. This student-centred initiative means peers cheerfully engage in resources because they are student-friendly and relevant.

Book Club is held every 2 weeks in our ‘Think Tank’ room. The student-driven studies focus on specific genres, authors and books. They also include film reviews and much social interaction and discussion. Our library collection has expanded to include literacy games and will continue to grow as we further develop this wonderful new area.

The Learning Commons is usually the first space that visitors to the school encounter. Students showcase skills and interests from the tiered seating area and visitors checking in at reception frequently comment on the positive and calm atmosphere that abounds.

It’s wonderful to see students taking ownership and embracing the Learning Commons with warmth and enthusiasm for the opportunities at hand.

We look forward to 2019 with the promise of further fulfilling initiatives and engagement.
