Year 12 Dean’s Report

Chris McLaren —

As-salāmu ʿalaykum - Peace be upon you.

Kia ora. Talofa lava. Mālō e lelei. Bula, Nǐ hǎo. Namaste. Kumusta. Xin chào. Konnichi wa.

The last couple of weeks have been challenging on so many levels. I thank the students for their resilience and inclusiveness. Hornby High School is a multicultural school and I enjoy the diversity of the students I work with.

It is important that students are encouraged to come to school to get a formal qualification. I ran a survey and most students responded to the question about why they come to school with ‘to learn’. It is more than just to learn (we learn each and every day). Students in Year 12 need to be at school to gain formal qualifications namely NCEA Level 2. Level 2 is also offered at SIT and ARA so when students are 16 and over, school is only one way of gaining qualifications. Going to SIT or ARA full time is not ‘dropping out’ but instead it is taking another pathway to learning.

Congratulations to the students who completed the Health and Safety course and the First Aid course. Great results and attitude to learning.

Also congratulations to Tyler, Frank, Jayton, Damien and Junior for your outstanding effort and contribution in the recent 9’s Rugby League tournament.

Congratulations, also to the Year 12 boys who were part of the Hornby High School Volleyball team that participated in the tournament last week. Junior, Ben, Kingston, Vai and Mala.

Last week was the MaiBiz programme which is offered to Year 12 students. They were put into randomly selected groups and needed to create and market a product. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the students collaborate and pitch their products. There was so much learning going on.

Finally, congratulations to Junior who came second in Javelin at the South Island Athletics competition. We have so many talented and hard working students in Year 12. I feel super proud of them all.

Any concerns or problems, please feel free to contact me.

Ngā mihi
