ESOL Department Field Trips

Lauren Briggs —

The Year 9 and Year 11 ESOL classes both visited Willowbank Wildlife Reserve during Term 2. The Year 9 class had been reading the book ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and visited the reserve on May 23rd to study some of the farmyard animals that featured in the book. The Year 11 class visited on June 4th and focussed on the Kea, a native New Zealand parrot, in preparation for their NCEA reading assessment.

The students prepared a list of questions for the keeper and took field notes. The Kea were very curious about the large group of students and took great delight in investigating the contents of students’ backpacks and perching on students’ heads and shoulders.

The Year 10 class visited the Antarctic Centre on June 5th and spent the day learning about life in the Antarctic from one of the Centre’s teachers. Students rode a Hagglund all terrain vehicle, spent time with some huskies, watched a 4D movie, froze in the storm room, and attended two lectures.
