2024 Cantamath Competition

Juliet Buenaventura —

The annual Cantamath Team Competition was held on the 21st of August at the Wolfbrook Arena.

The Cantamath has always been an exciting and prime event in August for our young mathematicians. It allows our students to exhibit their mathematical skills, reinforce their critical thinking, and appreciate the importance of teamwork. Our exceptional students from Years 7, 8, 9, and 10 participated in this competition to showcase their skills and abilities in this battle of the brains competition. Our Cantamath teams, with the help of the Mathematics Department and some senior students, sacrificed their lunchtime breaks for practice to sharpen their problem-solving skills.

The goal in the team competition is to complete 20 questions to get the golden ticket in 30 minutes. The first team to answer the 20 questions takes home the Cantamath trophy. Our dedicated teams exerted great effort, and even though they didn't complete the 20 questions, we are splendidly proud of them. All the competitors are considered winners by showing their courage, commitment, resilience, and standing up to represent Hornby High School. They were genuinely amazing and absolutely our pride in exhibiting our CARR values. Our teams were outstanding and it was a marvelous experience to meet and compete with other young mathematicians from other Canterbury secondary schools. Our teams consist of the following students:

Year 7: Xyryll, Jamilah, Kirsten, and Dylan

Year 8: Divya, Moira, Ngawari, and Vaoiva

Year 9:  Gnana, Nishka, Isla, and Mya

Year 10: Zane, Will, Sonnie, Tane
