Eclectic, Exciting Entertainment- Performing Arts
Oliver and Kaea our comperes, welcomed our community to an energetic evening event on 23 August. A weaving of the rich and colorful cultural strands of Hornby High Schools Performing Arts which impressed the audience with the variety of talent on show.
The opening number was an impressive dance solo from Hope, an experienced dancer who is a leader in our new NCEA Dance Course. Senior Dance performed two tightly choreographed numbers with joyous enthusiasm. The junior hip hop group, who recently competed in the Primary Schools HipHop competition which we hosted on 4 August, performed with grace and flexibility.
Gabriel, 13Music, rendered two emotional filipino ballads to the delight of the crowd and Benjamin and Alex from 11Music performed an accomplished guitar duet.
The 9Drama class had created a play about arrivals in New Zealand, exploring how their families had come to Aotearoa and the experience of recent migrants. These talented actors also joined the Drama Club’s musical piece from “Matilda”, Bruce Bogtrotter was played by messy Oliver, Ella was a beautiful Amanda, Alex a grumpy Ms Trunchbull and Kaea a large-hatted Cook. This was a very bold comedic piece. Mr Lemon called audience members up on stage to bravely play an entertaining Theatre Sports game, “New Choice” which was really funny.
The Filipino Youth Group provided a colorful dance spectacle by bursting from the back doors processing in rich headgear and lush costumes. The Indo-Fijian Dance group was also beautifully attired as they gave a preview of a traditional dance prepared for the Mere Rang event on 30 August.
Thank-you to all the staff who worked with these talented students - Katie Beer, Joanne Clark, Marijo Flores, Cameron Lemon, Nischa Mitesh and Isaac Wilkes
Thank you also to Top Dog Theatre who recently invited our students to their wonderful performance of “ Much Ado about Nothing”at the Isaac Theatre Royal. For many students this was their first visit to the beautiful Isaac Theatre Royal and live Shakespeare. It was a very funny slapstick performance and students enjoyed the audience interaction.
