Mathematics Department 2018

Warwick Werder —

Maths at Hornby High School has been on an engaging learning journey. We are now much more aware that Mathematical thinking is more about depth of understanding rather than the speed that students grasp new concepts. Maths is also about creativity and making sense of how we can use our maths skills in our everyday lives.

This year students have had many opportunities to engage in problem solving activities in the classroom and out with the use of inspirational maths lessons, and this year was the first year  the Maths department ran a chess competition as a celebration of Mathematics Week. Students and staff competed against each other.

Often the use of digital technology makes it easier for students to learn and conceptualise information. We introduced Mathletics, an online Mathematics program, to help students practice. Students also experience learning from traditional textbooks.

This year, as in previous years, some of our students from Years 7 to 10 entered the well-respected Cantamath Competition. We also entered a team into the Year 11 Casio Calculator competition for the first time. All the teams used lunch and interval times to practice and gained very pleasing scores. We were very proud of them.

The staff of the Maths Department for 2018 - Mr Daines, Mr Trenbeth, Mr Carter and Mrs Buenaventura - wish all our senior students the very best of luck for their external NCEA exam results. We would like to wish everyone a pleasant and safe summer holiday.
