Deputy Principal's Report

Jack Goodfellow —

Mid-Year Reports, Learning Conferences, Course Selection and Senior Assessment Week.

Mid-year reports for all students Years 7 - 13 have now been loaded and are available to view on the Parent Portal. Letters were sent home last week with your log in details. Please call the office if you have any issues.

In this reporting round, all students are graded on their demonstration of the school’s CARR Values (Commitment, Achievement, Resilience and Respect).

For junior students, Year 7 - 10, the mid-year report includes further grading for each subject based on academic achievement. Grades against achievement objectives are in four categories: Requires Support, Working Towards the Level, Achieved the Level and Level Exceeded.

For senior students, Years 11 - 13, achievement reporting is in the form of a summary of results of NCEA internal assessments undertaken so far this year. Grades for these assessments appear as Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit and Excellence.

We encourage you to access the report and use it as the basis of a discussion with your young person about how they feel their learning is going, now that we have passed the half-way point in the year.

We also warmly invite you to attend Learning Conferences on Thursday 15th August. This is a chance for you to meet your son/daughter’s teachers and discuss any concerns arising from the mid year report. Appointments are available from 1.00pm to 7.00pm. Further information on how to make these appointments will be emailed home.

Course Selection for 2020

From next week onwards, students will begin the process of selecting their course of study for 2020. We strongly encourage whānau input into the decisions young people make about the subjects they choose, no matter what level of the school they are in. Parent/caregiver sign-off of the selected subjects is an important step in the process. Again, the Learning Conferences on Thursday 15th August are a great opportunity to chat with teachers about your young person’s options for next year.

Course selection material will be released next week for all of next year’s Year 9-13s via email. Hard copies of the course information booklets will be available from reception.

Senior Assessment Week

Senior assessment week takes place from Thursday 22nd August through to Friday 30th August. During this time, senior students (Years 11 - 13) are not required to be at school, unless they have a scheduled assessment. Students should be in normal school uniform when they are at school for their assessments. For most subjects, assessments during this week take the form of a ‘practice’ exam that mirrors their end of year examination. These practice exams provide students with a good idea of what they need to work on before the end of year, and are also important because they produce a grade that could be later used as a ‘derived’ grade, if an unforeseen event disrupts the end of year examinations.

Some subjects may also use the time to assess students in other ways (for example, catching up on portfolio work, group assessments, etc). No matter what type of assessment your young person has scheduled, it is important they are at school on time and ready for that assessment.

The timetable for assessment week will be issued to students soon.
