Stars

Lucretia Treadgold —

Being a STARS Mentor has been a great opportunity to work with the Year 9s and get to know them well. We have an amazing team of Stars mentors that I work with.

I have had several memorable moments. We have a long way to go, but I am excited that we have the opportunity to achieve so much as a team. We can all make a difference if we work together.

I decided to become a Stars mentor because of the impact on me when I was in Year 9. It inspired me to become a mentor and to be a role model in and outside of school. Maybe one day some of our Year 9 students could be inspired the same way and want to be role models.

As a star mentor I have the amazing opportunity of working alongside the Year 9's and my great team of Stars mentors. Every Stars lesson, my team of Stars mentors makes sure that the class learns an important skill, value, or strategy, for their future. Through this program, I have learnt so much about the Year 9's and about myself. I have an amazing group of students who listen and are actively involved in the lessons. They participate in activities and work well together. This was not the case at the start of the year when I first took the class but since then they have come out of their comfort zone and made the lessons more enjoyable. Not only have they come out of their comfort zone but so have I. From this experience I have learned different ways of communicating; we all learn in different ways so I have had to learn to communicate instructions in various ways. Not only did I gain this skill but I also gained confidence, leadership skills, and teamwork. This experience has been very rewarding for me and I am very thankful for it. I do encourage anyone else who is interested in becoming a Stars mentor - or anyone still contemplating - to take up this opportunity. It is very rewarding.
