Apollo Projects Sporting Spotlight - Nyra Whiu
Apollo Projects are assisting Hornby High School financially and thus enabling our students to participate in sport to the highest level. This week we have the interview spotlight on Nyra Whiu pictured above holding the Te Poutoko Manawa Fairplay Trophy
Firstly congratulations on making the Te Waipounamu Maori Tournament team. How did that make you feel, when your name was announced in the team and named captain?
Amazing feeling. I was surprised to be named Captain, it was an honor. I stood near them with a positive mindset and leadership capabilities. Everyone in my team had the ability to lead in their own way.
Can you share your experience playing in the Tournament?
Next level - It is inspiring to compete at the Aotearoa Maori Netball Nationals. Each Waka (region) brings a different flare, a different style of play. The experience was not only about playing netball, it was learning the importance of Whakawhanaungatanga & Manaakitanga, to respect each other and build connections. Every year, each waka (region) sings a waiata (song) and do a march to voice who we are “To be Maori, be proud” “Ko Tahi Tatou”
How long have you played Netball for?
I have played netball for 12 years. When I was a little baby about 1 years old, My mum would gently throw a balloon at my head. As soon as I was 2 years old I could pass and catch a ball. Netball was generally brought up around me. My mum would consistently make me train everyday, rain or shine.
What is the one thing you love the most about playing Netball?
A good challenge. Although there are people bigger than me or fitter than me I try harder when I'm starting to lose resilience. I've generally just had a big passion for Netball because both of my parents have been playing for quite some time but seeing them play just brings more of a passion towards my netball.
Describe yourself in 3 words
Respectful, Passionate and Confident
What advice would you give other young players out there thinking about playing Netball?
Start from the basics. Passing & catching. Keeping an open positive mindset & attitude always helps and have fun.
Who are your biggest supporters and why?
My biggest supporters would be my parents. No matter how far away it is they will try their best to get me to my game/training and make sure I'm there on time. My mum would have to be my biggest supporter, shes been my coach since day one. I would like to thank Apollo Projects for their support, without it I would not have been able to participate and experience the tournament. Nga mihi nui - Nyra
