EU - Climate Change and Human Rights Challenge

Jan Handley —

The University of Canterbury along with the EU offered an opportunity for students to attend a European Union - Climate change and Human Rights Challenge on 11/12 June 2021. Five students from Hornby High School, Ella, Natasha, Nidhi, Nathan (Year 12), and Alyana (Year 13) took up the challenge along with about 170 students from other schools.

Prior to the day they were given an identity of a particular European country and a political party and were given information to research. Over the two days they were given a number of possible scenarios and were asked to debate them (under the belief of their political party) and then vote. Often it is a challenge to stick with your Party's views and not go into your own particular views but they displayed great resilience. The students worked well with others and loved the opportunities this event offered. On the first night Hornby students joined with Hillmorton students in the general knowledge quiz and came third, well done. Having talked to these students since, they said they found the experience worthwhile and are very keen to repeat it next year. Thanks to all those involved.
