Athletics Report

Ian Hilliard —

This year we offered the students a choice of entering the athletics in a competitive environment or a social environment. This worked well with just on a third of the students competing in the competitive environment and the rest participating socially and gaining house points by completing each event offered.

Due to ground conditions we had to hold the High Jump competition in the gym while the others ran smoothly outside. The day finished with Inter-House relays and then a Staff versus Prefects relay which was won again by the staff. The day was a great success and a great atmosphere was created by the student enthusiasm and competitiveness.

Records have been reintroduced based on the best of our research, and a total of 29 records were broken. Interestingly we still have a number of records dating back 40 years. Vicki Lewis still holds the Hornby High School and Canterbury Secondary Schools record she set in 1977 in the Under 14 Girls 100 metres in a time of 12.6 seconds. This is an amazing achievement.

We have now selected a team of 24 athletes to compete at the Canterbury Secondary Schools competition. Preliminary events are on Tuesday the 13th of March with Finals being held on Saturday the 17th. These are to be held at Rawhiti Domain starting at 9.00 a.m. We wish them all the best for this event.
