Stars Mentor

Lucretia Treadgold —

Being a Stars mentor has been a great opportunity, working alongside and getting to know all the Year 9s. I know that we have a long way to go but as a team I believe that we can make a difference. I have been a Stars mentor for 2 years now. I became a mentor because I wanted to reach out to younger students to make them realize that they all have a place in our kura.

This also helps me to grow as I take steps out of my comfort zone, talking about a wide range of subjects and interests. I was introduced to the programme  myself in Year 9 and it allowed me to do things that I would not usually experience. This year’s Stars students will be expanding their knowledge and confidence through experimental learning, goal setting and working in the community. I really enjoy being a Stars mentor.

I decided to become a STARS Mentor because I want to teach and become a role model to the Year 9 students. At first, I was so nervous especially when talking in front of the students. If you decide to become a Stars mentor, you might be really nervous at first but when you get used to it, you will start to enjoy it. I also became a Stars Peer Mentor because I want to develop myself by stepping out of my comfort zone. Being a Stars mentor is an amazing opportunity to work together with the Year 9's and get to know them well. We have such an amazing team of Stars mentors. So far I have enjoyed spending meaningful times with my class.
