Year 10 Dean’s Report
Kia ora, Talofa , Mālō e lelei, Bula, Namaste, Kamusta, Salutations Welcome to our two new year 10 students: Jasmine MacDonald and Raumata Rogers.
The year is going so quickly and it is so important that students maintain high standards at all times as next week they will be the most senior students in the school. I want all students to be successful and here are some ways that you as their caregiver could really help.
Chromebooks/laptops are a necessity and it is so important that those students who don’t already own a device need to purchase one as soon as practical. Do not believe your child who says they don’t need one, they most certainly do. There are too many students who do not own one or do not bring their device to school. This needs to change as it is becoming increasingly frustrating for teachers when students are not prepared each day for their learning.
Lateness as this can be an indication that they may struggle next year in NCEA if they can not manage their time or do not prioritise their education.
Uniform: With the warmer weather, students should not be wearing long sleeved tops under their school shirts. Please remind your young person at home of this. Socks are also becoming an issue. Socks should be either short or long dark blue with logos on them.
If there is a problem with uniform, then a note from home is required otherwise Whaea Jude will do her best to issue the student with the correct uniform.
Attendance: If your child is away, the school needs to be notified please. I spend time chasing up students and families about attendance when a call or text or email from home, is all that is required.
Congratulations to Tahla McQueen who was part of a Kapa Haka team that won the Canterbury regional championship held recently.
Hopefully next year the Hornby High School Kapa Haka may be part of the competition. It has improved so much and the following students are active members of our Kapa Haka group. They are Sapphire Borlase, Mya Newton Whare, Ashleigh Shortland, Oceana Olsen, Tyrese Newton, Damien Newton, Quiama Te Miha, Vaione Siaki, Malakai McGoon, Matalevai Allen and Khan Halliday.
It is wonderful when students participate in school opportunities, and Kapa Haka has really flourished this year.
If you have any concerns, please contact me.
Nga mihi nui
