Rebuild News

Our amazing new building and gymnasium are almost complete. Practical completion is set for 5th June. Throughout June the various tradespeople will complete the finishing touches, the heating will become operational and we will learn how to operate the building. From about the middle of June we will be able to start moving furniture and equipment into our new spaces. The big move will happen in the last week of term. There are no classes for the last three days of term (Wednesday 4th to Friday 6th July) and students are not required at school unless they are helping with the move.

Reports

Because of the big shift to our new buildings at the end of this term we have changed our normal reporting schedule to provide time for teachers to make the move. On the Friday before Queen’s Birthday weekend reports for all students will be placed on the KAMAR parent portal. There is a short progress report for junior students (Yrs 7-10) and a full report for senior students.

Then in Term 3 we will issue a full report for juniors. We will also hold another Learning Conference evening for parents and students to discuss progress. More details about this event will be issued nearer the time.

The KAMAR Parent Portal

Just a reminder that parents (and students) can check the KAMAR parent/ student portal at any time on any device. By logging on to the portal (https://web.kamar.hornby.school.nz) and then entering your student’s five digit user number and then either the student’s or the parent’s password, you should gain access. You can check attendance, daily notices, the term calendar, NCEA credits and personal details. Please call or email the office if you need help remembering your user number and password. On your smart phone or tablet you will need to install the KAMAR app (free) and add the URL to the settings. It is really very simple.

Affordable Internet Offer

We estimate that 80-90% of families in the Hornby area have broadband internet at home. However if broadband internet at home is beyond your budget, we can help. The Spark Jump programme offers a pre-pay broadband internet plan for $10.00 per 30GB of internet time. You don’t need a phone line as the modem is wireless. If this sounds helpful please contact Jon Rogers for more details or to sign up. You won’t find a cheaper deal.

NCEA Fees

For most students the NCEA fee will be $76.70. This includes all internal and external assessment. The NCEA fees appear on your school account as soon as your student gains some credits towards NCEA. However you do not need to pay the NCEA fees until term 3.

At the start of Term 3 you will receive an information package about NCEA payment from us. This will include details of your child’s NCEA entry, an information sheet and a financial assistance application form. We are asking that the NCEA fees be paid to the school no later than Friday 31st August. This allows the school to process the entries before sending them on to NZQA. If the fee is not paid, the student will not receive their Record of Achievement or NCEA Certificate next year. Parents are very welcome to set up an automatic payment with the Bursar to help budget these expenses.

Some students may wish to withdraw from entry for external exams. This should be discussed with teachers as well as parents. A final decision on which exam standards to enter must be made by 1 September. No changes to external standards can be made after this date.

Financial Assistance for NCEA Fees

Financial assistance is available to any family with a Community Services card or where a benefit is the main family income. Financial assistance reduces the NCEA fee from $76.70 to $20.00, so is well worth the application. A green application form will be sent with the posting, and extra forms are available at the office. Completed forms must be returned to Mr Rogers or the Bursar when the fees are paid. Contact Mr Rogers if you have any questions.

Enrolment Zone and Enrolments 2019

We are now open to accept enrolments at any level for 2019. Download an application form from our website or call into the office. Information about our enrolment zone for both Yr7&8 students and the secondary zone (Yrs9-13) can be found here: https://hornby.school.nz/prospectus-enrolment-form/
