Year 12 Dean's Report

Chris McLaren —

Talofa lava, Kia ora, Salaam Alaikum, Mālō e lelei, Bula, Nǐ hǎo, Namaste, Kumusta, Xin chào.

What a wonderful night out at the Court Theatre I had with Mrs Clark, Mrs Handley, Ms Kavanagh and this delightful group of students. Opportunities are endless at Hornby High School including sports, Kapa Haka, theatre outings, writing and speech competitions. Emails are sent to students about opportunities that are offered at ARA and SIT, leadership workshops and so forth. Students need to ensure they check their emails and take the opportunities that are offered.

Thank you to all the students who helped out at the recent Pasifika Speech Competition. One speech I heard, the young speaker said ‘I flew through level 1 NCEA and Level 2 flew past me.” I do hope this does not happen to this year’s learners.

Winter has arrived and many students are feeling the cold. Students can wear thermals under their uniform provided that the item cannot be seen. Girls can wear school trousers or tights to keep their legs warm. Boys can also wear school trousers and a long sleeved shirt.

The school does have woollen jerseys, cardigans, and regulation school jackets for sale. These items may seem expensive but if they are looked after and worn each day, the actual daily cost is quite low. Whāea Jude also has some second hand clothing which may be available if required.

Please make sure that clothes are named. Blazers are also able to be purchased and worn.

Wearing fleecy pants or trackies to school is not part of our uniform and lowers the tone of our school. At Year 12, students are seniors and need to be setting a high standard of dress and behaviour.

With the colder weather, it is also harder to get up and off to school. Please support your young person by having high expectations about them getting to school and on time. Well done to the students who have enrolled in full time courses for the next term. ARA and SIT offer a range of courses which still give students nationally recognised qualifications.

Upcoming Events:
Mrs Climo and I are taking a group of students to the Pacific Careers Expo on Wednesday 19 June.

Emerging Leaders Conference at Christs College on Tuesday 2 July.

We have 20 students attending both these events.

Visiting classes, I see there are still students without a device for learning. Chromebooks can now be borrowed from the student reception area but it is a case of first in first served. The devices are usually all gone by 8.15 am.

Any concerns, please contact me.

Ngā mihi
