Year 9 Health Class - Canine Friends visit

Alexandra Aitken —

The Year 9 students in Miss Aitken's Health class are learning about Animal Therapy. We were lucky enough to have Canine Friends visit us.

We had 6 volunteers come in with their therapy animals to teach us about services the animals provide, how they are trained and the venues that the animals visit. Therapy animals visit rest homes, prisons, libraries, schools, hospitals, homes, universities and they attend events such as Mental Health awareness days and much more. Therapy dogs can even visit before exams to calm nerves! The dogs come in all shapes and sizes- we had a Miniature Schnauzer to a Great Dane come in! We learned that the therapy dogs enhance all areas of hauora and wellbeing.

It was a fantastic experience having the therapy dogs come in and we look forward to our next visit with them.

We would like to say a big thankyou to the volunteers at Canine Friends for teaching us about therapy animals and for all that you do for the community.

Ngā mihi

Miss Aitken.
