Students learn to create experiences in a virtual reality world

A group of Hornby High School students is coming to grips with how to create objects and experiences in virtual reality. Under the guidance of Dr Claire Hughes, these students will  learn how to create these worlds, and will then create an experience that relates our cultural narrative to viewers.

Claire is a part of the 'Creatives in Schools' programme, funded by the Ministry of Education, in which Claire's time and much of the material costs are paid for by the Ministry of Education. The aim is to allow students to work with experts in their fields, pushing the boundaries of creativity as a tool to improve learning.

"This fits perfectly with our vision to be 'a centre of creative excellence', and with our Manaiakalani pedagogy 'Learn, Create, Share", said Tumuaki Robin Sutton. "These students are deeply engaged in this work, which had them creating 3D objects within their virtual world within two hours of beginning."

The programme runs through 2022, and represents some cutting edge work in education.
