Japanese Department - 2018

Nick Williams —

For the Japanese department, 2018 was an especially exciting, action packed year. The main highlight would have to be our trip to Japan during the July holidays, which was greatly enjoyed by all involved.

We spent two weeks in Japan at Tokiwagi Gakuen in Sendai, Northern Japan.

In addition to participating in a host of engaging events and activities organised by our host school, Hornby High School staff and students were also treated to absolutely stellar hospitality courtesy of our respective host families.

You can read two student blogs about the Japan trip by scanning the QR codes below or following the links:

Other highlights from this year also included our attendance at the 2018 NCEA Japanese Workshop Day in Term 2, during which our senior students were able to participate in three workshops together with students studying Japanese from all over the Canterbury region.

Our Year 10s were also able to experience a variety of Japanese cultural activities together with students from other schools at the 2018 Year 10 Japanese Afternoon which was held at Villa Maria.

In addition to these external events, our Juniors have been able to enjoy a variety of in-house Japanese cultural events throughout the year, included Onigiri (rice ball) making, Calligraphy, Origami and Sumo Wrestling.
