Athletics 2024

Ian Hilliard —

The weather gods have not looked kindly upon our athletics events this year. Our school event was badly affected with only one morning session being completed and then our back up day was a wash out.

The Canterbury Secondary Schools event started fine for the Preliminaries day and then the weather turned again with very strong cold winds and later rain in the evening of Finals Day.

Despite all this our students have shown great resilience and commitment and as a result have achieved excellent results whether it be top placings or achieving personal bests.

At the end of our school athletics Mōhua had accumulated the most house points with 690. Riroriro (519) and Tīeke (518) were extremely close in gaining second and third place.

At the Canterbury Athletics we fielded a team of 43 students. This included five students who are classified as Athletes with a Disability. All students showed great support for each other and eagerly awaited the final results of their events.

The highlight of the day was the results of our Para Athletes who set four new Canterbury Records.

Matty W. set three new records in the 100 metres, Shot Put and Triple Jump while Kaea K. set a new record in Shot Put.

Para Results

Matty W. Under 19 100 M 1st 16.54 sec, Shot Put 1st 7.40 m and Triple Jump 1st 7.29 m

Kaea K. Under 16 Shot Put 1st 8.05 m, 100 M 3rd 17.26 sec and Discus 3rd 16.05 m

Of the 43 students 33 qualified for the Canterbury Finals which were held in terrible conditions. Despite this, 20 students have qualified for the South Island Event to be held in Timaru.

High achievers on the night were Mitchell H, Laisa W. and Miguel F. who are Canterbury Champions in their respective events.
