Year 7-9 Mōhua Dean's Report

Terry Mitchell —

Kia ora whānau What a crazy, busy term this has been for all of us at Hornby High School.

Here is a list of just some of the things we’ve been up to in Term 4:

  • Hurumanu: Year 7 and 8 students have been busy with their Health Hurumanu in Term 4, where they learned about the changes that occur during puberty. Year 9 students have been taking part in Passion Projects during their Hurumanu classes. This is where they choose topics they are passionate about - subjects they want to explore more about.

  • Assessments: The students completed their end of year assessments this term; two PAT assessments (Reading and Maths) and five e-asTTle assessments (reading, writing and maths). While this is always a stressful time for the students they all performed really well and just quietly got on with the job at hand.

  • Wānanga: In Wānanga class we have had our business and enterprise kete, where students have learned about financial literacy and how to run their own business. As part of this kete the students set up their own businesses and made products which they sold at our Market Day. Mōhua students raised over $900 on Market Day, with a group calling themselves “Lil’ Charms” (Amanda, Jordan, Venice, and Vielle) winning the “Best Business” prize for Mōhua. Well done girls!

  • Colour Fun Run: On the last Friday of November we had our annual fundraiser for Kidscan. The kids had a lot of fun getting wet and colourful, with the bouncy castle being a highlight for many.

  • Friday Fun Day: Last Friday we had a range of fun activities for Year 7 to 10 students to choose from during Periods 4 and 5, including roller skating, multi-sport, movies, volleyball, e-sports, water challenges, and many more. The students enjoyed a really fun afternoon and it was a great opportunity for teachers and students alike to unwind after such a stressful and eventful year.

But all good things must come to an end, with the term (and the 2021 school year) now coming to a close. With just a few weeks left of 2021 let me take the opportunity to wish you and your whānau a safe and happy Christmas season and a restful summer holiday period.

Ngā mihi
