Anzac Remembrance Experience
For Literacy our students have been learning about Anzac. We have learned about World War one and two.
We researched how many of our soldiers were involved in that time of being enlisted and who had served, as well as those who did not return. We have read stories, and articles about the first landing of Gallipoli and the Māori Battalion. To gain a practical experience for my students, I had invited a member of the New Zealand Defence Force to come in and speak to the students about military life, and what Anzac means to him. We were very fortunate to have Lance Corporal Timothy Tupou come in and share lots of pictures of him serving overseas, the gear he wears on duty and out in the field. He was able to give one of our students a drill wearing the Army vest and pack. Many of our students asked various and thought provoking questions about his medals, his time in Iraq, his badges and what he felt about Anzac. All in all a great experience for my students and one we will not forget. We hope that through this experience, we can share a little of our history and to show our gratitude in commemorating those of our service men and women, past and present.
