Remembering Nova Mayo

Kaye Banks —

We acknowledge the passing of Nova Mayo in June this year.

Nova, along with her twin sister Nola were both huge advocates for a high school to be built in Hornby. Finally in 1975, Hornby High School was opened.

In the early years of the school, both Nova and Nola were involved in many aspects of the school, in particular the PTA.

Nova took over the running of the school tuckshop for many years and enjoyed the interaction with students immensely. She also taught nightclasses at Hornby High School.

Nova retired from the school tuckshop in 2005 but one would say did this wonderful lady ever retire?

Nova remained connected with the school and was present for the official opening of the first of our new buildings last year. Sadly, she did not get to see the opening of stage 2 of our rebuild, nor the removal of the original prefab buildings.

She was widely known around our school and the community as Hornby High Schools' number one supporter.

Rest in peace, Nova.
