Year 11 Dean's Report

Chris McLaren —

Kia ora, Talofa lava, Mālō e lelei, Bula, Namaste, Kamusta, Xin chào, greetings to all.

The year is going so fast and some students are realising that they are nearly across the NCEA level 1 finish line. I already know of one student who has an Excellence Endorsement as she has gained 50 Excellence credits already. It is all about attitude to learning and that student has worked hard for the credits she has gained.

Congratulations to the students who were selected and able to attend the Next Steps Camp. You were all amazing and participated with enthusiasm. Next year all year 12 students will have the option to attend the three day camp at Blue Skies.

A big shout out to the students who are part of our choral group, 'Voices for Soul'. I thoroughly enjoyed watching and listening to you sing at the Voices Festival which was held at Papa Hou in the city. Thanks Lina, Mara, Emmanuel, Oceana, Dani, Ashleigh and Juanita for being part of the group. Hornby was absolutely fabulous.

Course booklets have been emailed out and students need to select the 6 subjects they will study next year. English is compulsory and Maths is highly recommended.

Some students take two years to pass NCEA level 1 so they may well be taking a mixture of level 1 and 2 subjects in 2019.

Lateness is becoming a concern and students need to be in school by 8.25 as form time begins at 8.30am. I am now texting home when students are truant from form time or they are late to school. Time management is so important and a skill students need for their future.

We have only 8 weeks of learning left and I would really appreciate your help by ensuring your loved one is learning ready every day.

Finally, a laptop or chromebook is a tool that every student needs. If your child does not have one, it would be a very worthwhile investment for them to own one if they intend to return to school next year. The school chromebooks are being phased out and students without a device are disadvantaged.

Any concerns, or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Nga mihi
