I Am UNBREAKABLE

Sarah Kavanagh —

On Friday 15 June, Year 7, 8 and 9's got to see the world hip hop champions: IDentity Dance Company perform.

I AM UNBREAKABLE is an inspirational tour and social media campaign that exists to raise awareness around depression and anxiety with young people throughout New Zealand.

It exists to build strength and resilience and to inspire hope, empowering young people to discover their identity and purpose. The key message is to encourage young people, their whānau and communities to reach out for help.

I Am UNBREAKABLE aimed to give young people the tools that they need to cope with or overcome depression and anxiety, as well as educate those closest to them, their families and friends on how to help. We hope to remove some of the barriers that limit young people experiencing these issues to reach out for help.

At the end of the show a panel consisting of one of the dancers and Ms Kavanagh, our Guidance Counsellor, answered questions about mental health and how to get help. Then each of us was given a box of 'issue tissues' with tips and suggestions to help.

Key campaign messages include:

■ It’s ok not to be ok

■ You are not alone

■ There is always HOPE

■ Reach out for help by telling your friends and whānau, talk to your high school counsellor (kg@hornby.school.nz), free text 5626 or call 1737, visit  thelowdown.co.nz and The Lowdown facebook page

■ There is no shame in asking for help

■ It’s good to support a friend or family member experiencing depression or anxiety. Let your loved ones know you are there for them

■ Practical tips to help you cope with or overcome depression (sleep well, eat well, get active, be sociable!)

■ Connect with a local community support group

■ Talk to your 24/7 youth workers (Gabby, Harry, Vinnie and Vicky)
