Gateway - 2020

Linda Barnett —

Gateway has had another successful year despite some of the set-backs 2020 gave our students and their whānau. Most of our students have met their goals to ensure a great start toward their future.

26 students managed to obtain an average of 44 credits between them within their industry career choice. We were only able to report 23 of our students results as due to covid, we were unable to place 3 into a work placement.

Jayton received the Gateway Trophy for 1st in class 2020. Jayton managed to complete and pass every unit of work available, and was committed to gain as much as he could from his gateway course.

The career choices selected this year by our students included: retail – customer service; police; military; fencing; youth aid; IT – programming/design; nursing; medic; tourism; hospitality; childcare; sports coaching; elderly care; media; aviation and psychology.

The opportunity to be part of our basic employment health and safety course and gain their first aid certificate was a bonus for helping our students gain employment. Many of our gateway students were able to complete a level 3 course in health & safety (risk management), which will help them toward their career goals. Some of our students took on a further course in bar tending to give them some support toward part-time work while committing to further education. All did extremely well in their course work for their chosen career industry units.

We must thank all the businesses and organisations who have supported our gateway programme this year. They provided work placements for our students to "test drive” their career choice and help them prepare for the real world of work. Without them our gateway programme would not exist. We would like to thank Countdown, Woodcote Retirement Village, Hei Hei Kidsfirst, Air New Zealand, Canterbury Aero Club, Whitebait Media, Jade Software, Hornby Florist, and NZ Institute of Sport.
