An introduction to Uru Mānuka

Robin Sutton —

Kāhui Ako

There is a lovely whakatauki that says:

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari kē he toa takitini

My success should not be bestowed onto me alone, it was not individual success but the success of a collective

When teachers in schools work together (we call this collaboration), children in our schools are better off. Similarly, when local schools work together children within our schools are better off.

Eight schools in Hornby and the surrounding areas have been working together since 2009, and in 2018 we became a Kāhui Ako, an official group of schools that gains extra resourcing to support our work with children from across the area. The schools in Uru Mānuka (in alphabetical order) are:

Gilberthorpes Primary School (Ara Tū Whakatā)

Hornby High School (Te Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka)

Hornby Primary School (Te Māhuri Mānuka)

South Hornby School (Te Manu Tukutuku)

St Bernadette’s School

Templeton Primary School (Te Kura o Rātā)

Wigram Primary School (Te Piki Kāhu)

Yaldhurst Model School

As a group of schools we work together to build and maintain coherent pathways for our learners, your children, as they progress through their years of compulsory education, and into NCEA.

That extra resourcing at the moment goes into supporting the work of teachers in three particular areas:

  • Student wellbeing (we want all students to thrive)

  • Cultural identity (we want all students to feel comfortable in their own culture, and we want teacher and school practice to support that)

  • Digital Fluency (we want all students to have the skills and dispositions to be able to thrive as digital citizens).

If you visit our web site www.urumanuka.org.nz you can find out more about the work that the Kāhui Ako does to support our children in their educational journey.
