Year 13 Dean's Report

Chris McLaren —

Tena koe, Kia orana, Talofa lava, Mālō e lelei, Bula, Nǐ hǎo, Namaste, Kumusta, Xin chào, Salaam Alaikum, peace be with you.

The 2020 perfects continue to organise activities and greet students each morning. Their time of leading the school body has not been the easiest with the disruptions we have all experienced. The resilience they have demonstrated is admirable.

Emmanuel, Crystal, Jayton and Jorja, represented the prefect team at the Next Steps Camp. We all headed out to Blue Skies in Kaiapoi and after the students spoke we all enjoyed singing around the amazing campfire.

Congratulations to Mala McGoon, whom I heard has been potentially selected to trial for the Canterbury Under 21 Rugby team. I wish him all the best of luck.

Lateness and attendance

I would like your support by expecting and encouraging your young person to get to school on time. Due to some students' tardiness I have returned to running reflection time during lunch break. I shall be contacting home for those students who are often late to school. I understand that some students are not within walking distance to the school and so it is important that they manage their time so they can be here by 8.20am.

Academic Achievement

Congratulations to those students who are focused on doing their personal best and gaining the qualifications they want. All students can achieve but it does require work. Please check in with your young person and encourage them to track their progress weekly as teachers are busy marking and updating results.

Life after high school

If your young person is opting to work full time next year, I would strongly recommend that they start looking for employment now as at the end of the year, thousands of students will be in the same boat. Students need to make sure they have seen Mrs Climo our career’s advisor as she often knows of opportunities that are available. If they are moving onto a course or University, it is important that they apply as soon as applications open as often acceptance is on a first in, first served basis. If you would like to discuss your young person’s future, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Year 12 & 13 Formal

I very much hope this will go ahead as planned on Friday 11 September. All money must be paid in full by Friday 4 September. Should we still be in Level 2 by then, I have pencilled in an alternative date in Term 4, before our seniors depart.

Any concerns or questions you may have, please feel free to contact me at any time. ml@hornby.school.nz
