Year 10-12 Mōhua Dean's Report

Laurie Tafau —

Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo e lelei. Bula Vinaka. Fakaalofa atu. Namaste. Kumusta and welcome back to the 2021 school year at Te Huruhuru Ao O Horomaka Hornby High School.

I am really excited about the newly structured pastoral system this year, being the kāhui dean for Mōhua and having overview of students within this kāhui from Years 10, 11, and 12. The team of advisors within Mōhua, Mr Heath, Miss Aitken, Mrs Clark and Miss Abernethy are equally as excited. They are already working hard to walk alongside your tamariki in their educational journey.

It has been a whirlwind few weeks, with the holidays seeming like a distant memory. Our time has been filled with activities as diverse as timetable changes, new wānanga classes and subjects, working towards NCEA levels, and getting familiar with each other again after the long break.

It has been so lovely to re-connect with whānau who I already know, and to speak with and meet new whānau in our kura, and I look forward to many more conversations to come.

The focus in our wānanga groups for Term 1 is respect, looking at simple ways for students to show respect throughout the day; punctuality, uniform, their way of communicating and general attitude/effort are things I have more directly been discussing. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, about any of these things, please do not hesitate to contact me, or your childs’ learning advisor (form teacher).

I really am looking forward to the coming year, and can see most students are already engaged and working hard in lessons. Device use is high, although some students do seem to forget their devices often, or currently have broken ones. A device in class is a necessary part of a students’ stationery list, as all of our teaching resources and activities are online. If getting a device is a problem, please let us know and we will help if we can.

This term will continue to be filled with lots of activities and opportunities for everyone, both inside and outside of the classroom, and I look forward to seeing the students taking these opportunities and making the most of their time at school for the 2021 school year.

Ngā Mihi Nui,

Laurie Tafau
