Level 1 Geography Trip to the Beach
On Tuesday 11 May the Level 1 Geography class went on a research trip to the beach. The aim was to gather information around wind, waves and beach profiles. However, the best reason for the trip was that they are able to see how geography can be used in real life.
We visited four beaches on the day: Corsair Bay (a small beach with two headlands) facing south into Lyttelton Harbour, Taylors Mistake, a much bigger beach which also has two headlands but faces out to sea, Sumner Beach, a long wide beach with a headland at one end, and New Brighton beach, a very exposed beach with no headlands which faces Northwards.
The day was amazingly hot for May with temperatures reaching 26 degrees with very low winds. Unfortunately, we were not there to swim. The students collected a range of data including wind, wave, longshore drift, and beach profiles. On returning to the classroom this data was turned into tables and graphs and along with photos and précis maps was used to write a report.
The day was amazing with well organised and hard working students.
