Hands-On Otago - Risha P. Year 12

Risha Prasad —

I recently completed the Hands-On Otago programme and I feel thankful for this amazing opportunity.

My focus was mainly on Microbiology, and I also had the chance to attend taster sessions for Physiotherapy, Anatomy, and Va'a o Tautai (Centre for Pacific Health) throughout the week. I just wanted to share with you my amazing experience at Hands-on Otago. In my Microbiology class, I learned about various microbes that exist within our bodies and our surrounding environment. We studied how to identify and classify them by taking samples from our surroundings and our own bodies. We analysed human blood samples to understand how our body fights against bacteria. By performing a blood smear and examining the blood film under the microscope, we were able to identify different types of leukocytes (white blood cells). As part of a case study, we looked into food-borne illnesses found in cupcakes. Through the results, we discovered that cupcakes B and C contained Staphylococcus aureus, while cupcakes A and D contained E. coli. Later, we investigated the most effective antibiotics for each cupcake bacteria. We placed antibiotic discs such as amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, or penicillin on a bacterial culture lawn. By measuring zones of inhibition, we interpreted the antibiotic susceptibility of the bacteria. We found that penicillin was the most effective antibiotic for Staphylococcus aureus, while ciprofloxacin was the most effective for E. coli.On the first day, I attended a Physiotherapy taster session where I learned how to use equipment to improve my physical health in a way that is enjoyable for patients. On the second day, I attended an Anatomy taster session. During this session, I spent 2 hours learning about the female reproductive system and also looked at the human placenta. Finally, on the third day, I visited the Va'a o Tautai (Centre for Pacific Health) to learn about the opportunities available to Pacific students. We also had to create and sell a programme for Pacific students in Otago. Our group came up with a programme that allows Pacific students to move back to their country and support their area of education by volunteering and teaching. During my time on campus, I had the pleasure of exploring colleges(dorms) available to first-year students. We had various tours, including those of the dental school and the anatomy museum, which was particularly fascinating as it contained a collection of real human organs and parts. Overall, we had an enjoyable and informative experience exploring the campus and its offerings.I have learnt about life as a student at Otago University, especially in terms of learning and living, thanks to this program. I owe this opportunity to the funding support provided by Hornby High School. I am grateful to our school for allowing me to have this experience and enhance my knowledge. I believe that this program has helped me grow and has also helped improve the representation of Hornby High School. In conclusion, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you and Hornby High School for your support.I hope you enjoy some photos from my week at Hands-On Otago:
