Level 3 Geography Trip to Akaroa

Jan Handley —

On Wednesday 27 March, a group of Level 3 Geography students along with Mrs Handley, Mr Wilson, and Mr Young, went on a field trip to Akaroa.

This trip linked to their 'Contemporary Issue' study on Freedom Camping on Banks Peninsula. They first gained an understanding of Banks Peninsula, how big this feature is, and how it links to Christchurch.

We travelled out past Tai Tapu and out to Little River where we identified areas that freedom campers might stay. From there, we went to the lookout at the top of the hill to view what Akaroa Harbour and the surrounding area looks like. Following that we visited both French Farm and Wainui where until recently people were allowed to freedom camp. This has now stopped, as a result of some of the issues that have arisen with freedom camping.

On arriving at Akaroa we visited the official freedom camping site where a few of the students chatted with those who were using the site. They also identified signage about the requirements of freedom camping.

The visit was a great way for the students to learn about freedom camping and to have a better understanding of the wonderful area known as Banks Peninsula.
