Year 10 Camp

Allan Kane —

Just like this year, camp was 'on again, off again'... then finally 'on again'. Thanks to the huge efforts of the staff of both Boyle River Outdoor Education Center and Hornby High School, we were able to run a Year 10 camp.

This year instead of happening in June, camp was right at the end of the school year in December. This meant we were able to offer a range of different activities – a lot of them being water based.

The students were challenged first by being put randomly into groups – this meant they needed to find out what strengths each of them could bring to enable them to complete the different activities. These ranged from having feet firmly stuck in the mud to being many meters up in the air.

The students on camp learned a lot about each other, made great connections with the senior students and staff, this will all help with their studies next year. We encourage all Year 10's to attend camp next year.

Camp also has strong curriculum connections and this was tested with a quiz which was hotly contested and the camp finished with the Amazing Race – where students use what they have learned about each other and the environmental knowledge gained on camp, to compete and complete several challenges. Camp finished with the awarding of the Hornby High camp trophy to the winning team.

A huge thank you to the senior students who gave up some of their hard earned holiday time to come and help cook the food for us and guide and mentor the groups of students.

It has been a fantastic and fun way to finish off what has been quite a year.

Thanks again to all who worked so hard to make camp a possibility for our students this year.
