Matariki in Whare Toi Whakaari

Joanne Clark —

The school community gathered together to celebrate Matariki with good company, food, stories and songs.

The reappearance of the seven Matariki in the dark skies of mid-winter signals the beginning of the Maori new year. Not all iwi celebrate at the same time but it is a wonderful opportunity to get together.

Performances included NCEA group performances, teacher/student collaborations and some impressive Level 3 theatre devising. We also displayed some beautiful artwork from 8Gb and the Whanau class. In Kakariki (the Green Room) students enjoyed some awesome digital work, games created by Mr Carter’s digital tech class. Everyone especially enjoyed wonderful shared kai, including food from the Year 7 & 8 market that afternoon.
