Debating

Joanne Clark —

This year an argumentative group of students were encouraged by Mr Russell Cairns to sharpen their tongues, hone their fighting skills, and join the New Zealand Schools' Debating Competition.

In Term 1 debates had to be via zoom but in Term 2, escorted by Mrs Joanne Clark, they started live rounds at St Andrew's College on Thursday evenings. Competitors- Tia, Sofia M, Sofia R, Emalea, Risha, Ebony went through 6 competition rounds learning how to construct an argument, identify points of clash and handle interjection. All have gained new skills in speaking with confidence in public . We also competed in two one-day tournaments, an intense experience learning valuable tips from other teams and excellent feedback from adjudicators.. We look forward to growing public speaking and debating in our kura.
