Head Prefect's Report

Shardey Harris & Lachlan Hickford —

Term 2 is flying by incredibly quickly, we are already halfway through the term! The prefect team has been really busy.

Musical Fundraiser

In response to the tragic events that occurred on March 15th, we wanted to do something positive to bring our community together to raise funds for three families within our community who were affected. Therefore, the prefect team and Performing Arts department decided to organise a Musical Fundraiser on Tuesday 14th May.

Thank you to all those who took the time out of their evening to attend the concert! We were so pleased to be able to have such an amazing crowd to perform for! In total, we raised $600 which is an absolute testament to our community's aroha and manaaki, and willingness to help one another, which makes us feel even more proud to be a part of the Hornby community.

Polyfest 2019

On May 4th, Hornby High School’s Polyfest group represented our school alongside secondary schools across the greater Canterbury region in a colourful and festive display celebrating the Pacific youth and their cultures. Our group performed their hearts out and sang so beautifully after months of interval, lunch, after school, and weekend, practices.

The group was led by Lavisha Tatu with the support of Mr Wilson and other Year 13 leaders Siline, Cecilia, Christina, Anna, Malia and Casey. There were also many other supporters and families who worked behind the scenes to do things such as make uniforms, bring them to practice, and get them ready on the day.

Year 13 vs Staff Multi-Sport

The staff and Year 13 students once again faced off against each other in an intense game of Multi-Sport during week 4. There was a lot of talent on display from both teams and we had a great crowd of people from all year groups come along. The teachers took an early lead with a dominant display in the first few rounds but in the end, the Year 13's pulled off a stunning comeback to win by one point in the last round. Overall it was a great atmosphere with the crowd cheering everyone on and both teams giving it their all. We look forward to the rematch in week 10.

Pasifika Speech Competition

During week 4, our school also hosted the SPACPAC Pasifika speech competition, which was a wonderful evening that celebrated the Pasifika language and culture. We hosted students and their families from across the city in our schools classroom spaces, where they presented speeches in Samoan, Fijian, Tongan and Niuean etc; in which they all did such an amazing job. It was such a wonderful night to celebrate all of the different cultures that we have here in Christchurch, and was also extremely heartwarming to see so many members of the Pasifika community.

We were very proud to have had over 50 of our Hornby High School students and staff volunteer as helpers on the night!! Thank you to all the members of our wonderful Hornby High School community who were a part of making this night a success!

There are still lots of things to look forward to for the remainder of the term such as:

Year 10 Camp

Year 10 camps will be commencing during week 7 & 8, which means that it is going to be very busy for those students involved and staff as well. We hope that all the teina, tuakana and facilitators have an amazing week, and hope to see them all coming back with lots of stories to tell.

Te Kora

Through the Māori Women's Development Inc. we are pleased to be able to offer an interactive and practical learning programme called Te Kora to tauira Māori in Year 12 and 13. This will be held on June 18th (at no cost to the school) where a facilitator will run a 5-hour workshop with the tauira. They will learn about techniques, terms, and tools within te ao pakihi and explore what it takes to bring an idea to life.

Formal

The Year 12 & 13 Midnight Masquerade Ball is coming up at the end of the term during week 9. Many have already got their tuxes and dresses ready, makeup and hair appointments booked.

This year the formal will be held on Friday 28th June, at Twiggers in Addington Racecourse.
