Careers Report

Barbara Climo —

This year I have thoroughly enjoyed my new role as Careers Advisor. Last year, I was lucky to receive a PPTA Scholarship which enabled me to study full time. I studied a Diploma in Career Guidance. I have been able to come back to school and put into practice what I have learnt.

In term three Mrs Barnett and I moved into the new school building and we are now located just to the right of reception. This is a wonderful location as we are now very central and students can drop in at any time.

We have had thirteen Year 12 students on dual enrolment programmes. They have been studying at both Hornby High School and at Ara, SIT and Avon City Ford. They have been studying construction, engineering, retail, sustainability and outdoor education, automotive engineering and supported learning hospitality. Our students have really enjoyed this opportunity and it helps support their transition into either full time study or the workplace.

This year we have taken students to a variety of careers events, including Girls in Hi Vis, BNZ 'closed for good', Got a Trade Day, Careers Expo and a Police visit. Students have also participated in Star Taster courses at Ara in 'Introduction to Java Script', 'Coding for Controllable Devices', 'How to be successful in IT', Introduction to Animal Science', 'Fashion' and 'Nursing'.

Year 12 students also participated in University of Canterbury Discovery day. We took a group of 50 Year 11 and 12 students to Ara’s open day in June. Overall it has been a very busy year and I am hoping to get more students out of school next year looking at different career options.

We are finding that students who do not have their drivers licence face a real barrier when they are looking for full time or part time work while studying. We are trialling a programme next year in which Careers will subsidize a student's licence. Year 12 students in 2019 will need to pay the application fee and we will pay for one test fee. This year we had a number of apprenticeship opportunities for our students but the students required a restricted licence. On the Hornby High Careers google site, under the classes tab, there is a drivers licence tab. There you will find the information that students need for learning the road code and the relevant forms that are required.

I have enjoyed meeting students' whānau this year. It is very important that whānau are involved in their child's career journey. Please feel free to contact me at any stage via phone or email.
