School Gardening Group

Mark Sowerby —

A group of students made a start on developing the new Edible Garden at HHS last year.

The overall design was initially developed during the first lockdown and 5 of the garden beds were built and planted in 2021. We started with a good crop of broad beans and planted sweetcorn, rhubarb and tomatoes at the end of the year, all of which are growing well and getting ready for harvest!

The garden will be used to grow fresh vegetables for students to use in the school cooking classes, to take home and to give to local food banks. This year we hope to develop another 5 garden beds, plant a Feijoa hedge and get a compost bin and worm farm up and running. We are grateful for the donation of 3 apple trees from Edible Canterbury and a load of bark mulch from Treetech
Any students that want to get involved are welcome to come and join in every lunchtime.
