Academic success

Robin Sutton —

Top academic students continue to flourish at Hornby High School with news of two Scholarship examination successes. 2021 Head Student Cameron gained a scholarship in statistics, while Nathan (Year 12 in 2021) gained a scholarship in English.

Scholarships are awarded to students who score in the top 1.5% to 2.5% of their entire national year group.

Nathan's scholarship is especially commendable because he was in Year 12 when he sat the examination. Scholarships are more usually attempted by students in their last year of secondary school Year 13.

This comes on the back of the school's second successive year with high Merit and Excellence endorsements across all three levels of NCEA. In 2021 these endorsement rates doubled, and this level of endorsement continues to hold into 2022.

Successes like these are the result of dedication by the student, the mentoring and teaching of individual teachers, in fact they are the result of the entire 6 or 7 years of nurturing and teaching from an incredibly dedicated teaching staff. Every member of our staff team contributes, whether it is the regular cheery ‘Mōrena, my lovely’ from Kelly at the front desk, or the deeper conversations with a student’s Dean, or Learning Advisor, that guide and nurture aspiration for our akonga. Every one of these moments builds to the eventual success of each individual learner. Ka mau te wehi!!!
