2023 Cantamath Competition

Juliet Buenaventura —

The most awaited 2023 Cantamath Team Competition was held this year on the 23th of August at the Wolfbrook Arena.

August is considered to be the Mathematics month and Cantamath is an exciting part of our school calendar for our junior students. It gives an opportunity for students to exhibit mathematical skills, intensify critical thinking and excellent team effort. Eight of our young mathematicians in Year 9 and Year 10, four members each year level, displayed their skills and abilities in this battle of the brains. Our Cantamath teams with the help of Mrs Walker and some senior students sacrificed their lunch time breaks for practice to sharpen their problem solving skills.

The goal in the team competition is to complete 20 questions to get the golden ticket in 30 minutes. The first team to answer the 20 questions takes home the Cantamath trophy. Our dedicated teams tried their best, and even though they were not able to complete the 20 questions we are very proud of them. They are always considered to be winners by just showing their courage, commitment, resilience and standing up representing Hornby High School. They were genuinely amazing and absolutely our pride exhibiting our CARR values. Our teams were outstanding and it was a marvelous experience to meet and compete with other young mathematicians from other Canterbury secondary schools. Our teams consist of the following students:

Year 9: Banin (PsT), Michael (BtM), Venice (BtM), Wiari (PsT)

Year 10: Mitchell (TrM), Reuben (KeT), Aliyah (TpT), Brie (BtM)
