Level 1 Geography Trip

Jan Handley —

In the last week of Term 1, the level 1 Geography class went on a trip to four beaches around Christchurch. The beaches that we visited were Corsair Bay in Lyttelton Harbour, Taylors Mistake, Sumner Beach and New Brighton Beach.

While travelling from Corsair Bay to Taylors Mistake we were able to drive on the new road from Lyttelton over the hill to Sumner. It was lovely to see the completion of the road as it has been closed since the February Earthquake in 2012.

At the beaches the students formed groups and collected data on wave height, wind speed, longshore drift and beach angle as well as identifying human impact on the beaches. The weather was pretty good with enough wind to help with the research. The students were awesome and quickly got on with their tasks and recording the data.

This great day out has lead to them completing the research standard in which they can gain both numeracy and literacy credits.

Another awesome day out for the Geography Department.
