We are a Smokefree (and Vape-free) Kura

Jack Goodfellow —

We wish to remind all members of our school community that we are committed to being a smokefree school, which includes being a vapefree school.

Under the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products (Vaping) Act, it is an offence to smoke or vape in legislated smokefree areas. All kura in Aotearoa/New Zealand are legislated smokefree areas.

Young people who are caught smoking or vaping on the school site can expect to be dealt with in a variety of ways. Depending on severity, school responses could include:

  • A warning from senior leadership

  • Confiscation of products relating to smoking or vaping (parent or caregiver to collect)

  • Detention

  • In-school stand-down

  • Whānau meeting

  • Health nurse intervention

  • Full stand-down (continual disobedience)

We have seen an increase in vaping in recent weeks (from a very small proportion of our young people). We appeal to families to help monitor their young person’s possession of smoking or vaping material.

We appreciate the community's support in helping us ensure our school is smoke (and vape) free.
