Performing Arts at Hornby High School – 2024 Recap
The Performing Arts play a pivotal role in nurturing innovative, creative, literate, and critical-thinking New Zealanders. It’s fantastic to see so many students thriving in our Performing Arts spaces this year.
2024 Highlights
This year kicked off with energy and enthusiasm, bolstered by a strong team: Mrs. Joanne Clark (Drama, Years 7–13, and Junior Dance), Mrs. Katie Beer (Music and NCEA Dance), and our newest full-time addition, Mr. David Rea (Music and Junior Dance). Mr. Rea brings a wealth of experience with a Bachelor of Music Arts and over a decade as a professional musician.
The Performing Arts Department delivered dynamic programs across all levels. Every Year 7 and 8 student engaged in Drama, Dance, and Music, while Years 9–13 enjoyed comprehensive courses in Music, Drama, and Dance, including full NCEA programs. With three classes often running simultaneously, the creative atmosphere at our kura has been truly inspiring, and we are excited to see our talented young performers and musicians shine.
Extracurricular Activities
Our school has been bustling with a variety of extracurricular activities, including:
Cultural Performances: Polyfest, Bollywood, and Filipino Independence Day celebrations.
Competitions: SCGNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival and the Court Theatre's Theatre Sports.
Creative Endeavors: Uber Rock Band, 48-Hour Film Making, and Hip-Hop Dance.
Students also benefited from individual lessons with visiting teachers specializing in guitar, drums, piano, and more.
