Year 8 Student: "Kia ora Miss, thank you for taking our class. I like Maths, it’s my favourite subject". And I answered, “Wow! You’re welcome, it’s my pleasure to be your teacher today. It makes me feel better today when you say you like Mathematics. Are you good at Maths? The student answered, ‘No, Miss, but my dad and my sister helped me at home. I said, “Brilliant, keep it up!”

In November a trip to Orana Park was organised for all year 9 students.

What an amazing year it has been of smashing goals on Project K. This year's group has bonded so well and risen to all of the challenges that have been put in front of them.

We have outstanding leaders here at Hornby High School! It has been an absolute pleasure to journey with the Year 12 and Year 13 Peer Mentors during 2023.

As we reflect on the year at Hornby High School, the Business Studies department is proud to witness the growth, engagement, and enthusiasm of our students throughout the year.

Careers department had a great year of opportunities for our students. We started off with our university visits and of course Ara – Te Pukenga. Giving students an introduction to a variety of educational courses, degrees, and certificates.

This year has been another successful year for Gateway. Having 26 students through the Gateway programme we managed to end the year with a very successful NCEA credit pass rate. This has only been achieved with hard work and determination given by our Gateway students.

2023 was a huge year for the Japanese department, during which we were able to successfully carry out our first overseas trip since 2018 to our sister school Tokiwagi Gakuen in Sendai, Japan.

Kia ora koutou katoa, 2023 has been a busy and highly successful year for the Health Department.

The Performing Arts spaces bustled with rehearsals for dance groups,instrumentalists, theatre sports, preparations for cultural events and with itinerant music lessons. Students worked on a variety of skills such as acting, music composition, script interpretation, dance and improvisation. It is exciting to work creatively with our talented students.

Congratulations to our athletes who competed in the CAIMS Athletics tournament held at Nga Puna Wai.

An awesome day was had by a number of Duke of Edinburgh Award participants over the 18th-20th November.

We didn't have enough numbers for a Level 3 Year 13 class this year. But we began with a full Level 2 Year 12 class and also ran 2 semester Level 1 Year 11 classes (1 first half of the year and another in the second half)

Oliver and Kaea our comperes, welcomed our community to an energetic evening event on 23 August. A weaving of the rich and colorful cultural strands of Hornby High Schools Performing Arts which impressed the audience with the variety of talent on show.

On the morning of Saturday, July 8th, 2023, 10 Hornby High School students, their families and 2 staff members gathered at Christchurch International Airport for our first Japan trip in over 5 years.

On Wednesday 10 May Level 1 and 2 Geography went on their annual research trip to the beach.

During the year, our Year 13 History class learned about the Central Otago Gold Rush and are completing a 10 credit large research internal on this. We had the opportunity to go down to Arrowtown to experience history first hand and gather information to help with understanding of the topic.
