Welcome back

Kate Mclachlan —

Welcome back to all our wonderful family and whānau to our 2021 school year.

A message from our Board Chairperson, Brent Heslop

Kia Ora Hornby Primary Community.

Welcome to the start of the schooling year and I hope you had a great break, a special welcome to our new families.

During the break, our wonderful principal Gary Roberts had some surgery and is currently recuperating at home. I'm sure you will join me in wishing Gary a speedy recovery. In Gary's absence, Kate Mclachlan will be Acting Principal until the beginning of March.

Message from Mrs Mclachlan

As Brent Heslop has mentioned, we wish Gary Roberts a speedy recovery and look forward to his return in early March. In the meantime, if you have any concerns please do not hesitate to see your child's teacher in the first instance and then myself.

A special congratulations to Georgia who was married in mid-January. Miss Harris will now be known as Mrs Vakapuna. We would also like to congratulate Whaea Rovena and Whaea Megan on their recent pregnancy announcements.

Thank you to all those who attended this weeks parent/child/teacher meetings. This is a really nice, relaxed way to begin the school year and to get to know each other. If you were not able to attend, please make arrangements with Kersten or your child's teacher to reschedule this.

School hours - A friendly reminder that we strongly encourage children not to arrive at school before 8.30am. Instruction starts at 8.55am and finishes at 2.55pm.

Swimming - As long as the temperature is suitable, classes will be using the heated school pool on alternate days. We suggest children bring their dry togs and towel every day. Swimming is an important part of our curriculum and is an essential skill. Unless there is a medical reason, it is expected that all children will swim.

Sun hats - Wide brim sunhats must be worn in Terms 1 and 4. If children do not have a hat they must spend their break times underneath the shade cloth at the picnic table area. We also encourage children to have sunblock applied before they arrive at school.

Stationery - The fee for stationery is $20 and can be paid by cash or eftpos to Kersten at the office. This covers the costs of exercise books, pencils, pens, rulers, glue sticks etc and on-line subscriptions such as Mathletics. We have no sports fee again this year.

School lunches - This year we have taken up the offer of free school lunches that will be provided to all students every day. We recommend that you still pack food for morning tea and for hungrier children, an extra snack to go with their lunch.

Upcoming Teachers Only Day - Friday 5th March School will be closed for teachers to attend a training course. Other schools in the local area will also be closed.

School Picnic - 18th February 4.30 - 6.00pm. The school pool will be open along with equipment for playing with. Bring your own picnic food for your family/whānua. This will be a great chance to meet our community.
