'Cabbage Tree' sculpture up for auction

Hororata Parish —

Backyard artist, John Ballagh has created a stunning 'Cabbage Tree' sculpture to raise funds for the Hororata Parish.

Standing four meters tall John Ballagh's unique 'Cabbage Tree' sculpture is a striking artwork. Symbolizing the New Zealand Cabbage Tree, traditionally used to mark trails, boundaries, urupā (cemeteries), and births, this sculpture stands tall as a way-finder.

Crafted from mild and stainless steel bolted together over several weeks its twisted shape casts intricate shadows as the sun moves around it. Over time the steel will elegantly rust giving the piece more depth and interest.

This is without a doubt a statement piece with a unique story that has been built with love for a good cause.

John has created this stunning sculpture to be auctioned with all proceeds going to the Hororata Parish. The Hororata Parish offers spiritual comfort and compassion to whoever asks or is in need. Pastoral Care is an integral part of its ministry, within its gatherings for worship services and beyond the church walls.

The Pastoral Care that the Parish extends is vital to this rural community which spans 250 square kilometers. COVID has affected the Parish's ability to fundraise with its annual Hororata Spring Fair not being able to take place in 2021. These funds enable the Parish to extend its care to the community.

The Cabbage Tree Sculpture can be viewed at the Hororata Parish Art and Soul exhibition at 'The Artist's In' from 10th June. CLICK HERE for details.
