Hororata Golf Club Centenary Tournament

Hororata Golf Club —

All past and current members are invited to celebrate the centenary of the Hororata Golf Club.

Hororata Golf Club History 1922 – 2022

The Hororata Golf Club has been an important feature of our community since 1922. It was originally at the Hororata Domain when in 1922 Godfrey Hall offered land to the Club lease at Terrace Station. Nine holes were established and the Club was officially formed.

The Club had many happy years at Terrace Station with membership growing considerably. By 1966 HGC had outgrown its nine holes at Terrace Station.

Club decided to empower a small group; S J Hunt, Dr J Brownlee, R Reid and E H M Richards (Toby) to look at establishing a new course at the Glentunnel Domain.

1966 30th July The negotiations were successfully concluded and due to a very wet winter construction was delayed till later in the year when twenty-two bulldozers were used to clear 20 acres of 12-foot gorse and broom over 2 days with local D Bell and his 14-ton HD6 at the helm. Funds for this construction were all either donated or raised by the then one hundred members.

Thereby laying the foundations for what today is arguably the most magnificent county course in the South Island

Crops were planted Wheat and Rape and stock grazing were sold to help fund the irrigation system. Trees, trees and more trees were planted around the course. Mr Henry Robb donated substantial specimen trees and the Deans family many Rhododendron.

The course now boasts a magnificent Arboretum of specimen trees thanks to our forefathers.

1969 Course at Terrace Station was officially closed after 47 years.

1970 18th April the Clubhouse was officially opened.  In the late 70s, a further nine holes were added to the Course.

1980 – the present day

The Club has worked hard to purchase new equipment and continually make improvements to the Course. The Club now employs a full-time green keeper.

One of the first clubs to amalgamate Women and Men and become one club, the club is gender neutral.

Floods and winds over the years have damaged the Course and challenged the Club. However, members have always banded together when needed to repair their course.

In 2018 the Club added a café to the clubrooms (Café On The Green) which has proved to be a great asset and is very popular with locals and visitors.

The latest improvement to the Club is a purpose-built cart shed – with the growing demand for carts this was necessary and is proving another good decision.

The club has 220 members and rising.

Conclusion as written by Peter van Zoggel for our 75th Jubilee

The Hororata golf club can pride itself in being one of the few around where individual egos do not seem to count. The club works together as a team where even faced with adversity (Virus, Floods and Windstorms) they have triumphed.

The lovely little golf course processes a real sense of family and togetherness – long may last.

The Hororata Golf Club will celebrate its Centenary 23rd - 25th of September.
