Whānau Hui Term 4, 2024

Leo Spaans —

Looking forward into 2025.

Thanks to the whānau and staff who attended this week's Hui. As always your care, passion and commitment to our kura and akonga is highly appreciated. We certainly valued the discussion around our developing Te Reo Maori Learning Progressions (bite sized language learning steps) and your thoughts around continuing to address attendance challenges for whānau.

It was also affirming to listen to suggestions around;

  • The introduction of the Maori alphabet in junior classes.

  • Use of macrons vs double vowels.

  • The development of Tikanga awareness.

  • The ongoing development of our local and Aotearoa NZ histories learnings.

  • More noho experiences or Marae visits at all levels.

  • More onus on electives and experiences to develop engagement.

  • Teaching the Kingitanga. Keep looking at Waikato history.

  • Cultural leadership beyond kapa haka.

  • Making better use of our Maori resources.

  • Incorporating Te Whare Tapa Wha into our Zones practices.

I would also like to acknowledge Whaea Kath for her organisation, Hans for opening and closing and the whānau who took the opportunity to acknowledge some of the great work of some of our Hukanui staff. This meant a great deal to us and served as a great motivator going forward.

A PDF of some data and information share with whānau is attached for your reference purposes.

Nga mihi, Leo
