Who We Are

ICON —

ICON neighbourhood association was founded in 1980 by a group of inner-city residents.

Active foundation members included Richard Owen (still a local after more than 40 years), Rev. John Roberts (of the Durham Street Methodist Church) and Rev. Boyd Glassey (of St Andrews Presbyterian Church) who were later joined by David Thornley (architect who lived in the Arts Centre), Diana Shand and Helen Crowder among others.

The group was concerned that the area’s predominantly residential character was experiencing an influx of commercial interests and was threatened by the loss of heritage buildings giving way to high-rise construction. Members were especially keen to retain the old Normal School on the corner of Kilmore and Montreal Streets.

Sadly, the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 made saving the old school impossible. However, other goals created by the group at the time remain as important today.

These include the creation, protection and maintenance of:

  • inviting streets and places that prioritise people;
  • safer streets and a close-knit community;
  • inner city and neighbourhood heritage – buildings, certain institutions, significant open spaces, landmarks, historic sites, significant trees or gardens, air quality, and the banks of the Avon River;
  • local wildlife;
  • certain events, especially those of cultural or heritage value; and
  • bylaws and zoning beneficial to residents.

The ICON area is currently increasing in population, largely because new apartments are being built. Some heritage buildings are being restored, often involving a conversion to apartment dwellings. Households tend to be smaller than the Christchurch average residence with a high proportion of professional people and older people with a significant influx of young urban couples.

Members of ICON are mostly residents, ratepayers, and small businesses. However, parties outside the neighbourhood boundary with a vested interest in protecting inner city features, heritage and lifestyle are very welcome to join.
