HAGLEY PARK REFERENCE GROUP - MAY 2024 REPORT TO ICON

ICON is represented on the Christchurch City Council's Hagley Park Reference Group. Established in 2018, it’s stated Objective is 'To engage and collaborate with Council (the Administrator) in a timely and professional manner that will assist and enhance Council's decision making processes associated to Hagley Park and the operative Hagley Park Management Plan.

Matters considered at the May 2024 meeting included:

  • South Hagley Park Waterways Projects - two tributaries of the Ōtākaro-Avon River Riccarton Stream - a bioscape is proposed near Nancy's Woodland to improve water quality as part of an agreement with ECan. (A bioscape is a proprietary product, which filters stream water.) Only mulch and plants would be visible. Planned for 2027 completion, subject to Council approval.
  • Addington Brook - the first stage is underway of the Council's major renewal project to improve the Brook's biodiversity and health, enhance the landscape, restore drainage capacity and address safety issues. A bioscape is also proposed to be sited beyond Hagley Park. https://newsline.ccc.govt.nz/news/story/south-hagley-waterway-to-be-restored
  • Armagh Street Car Park (North Hagley Park) - This area was never designed as a car park. To preserve and improve the condition of the remaining trees, Council staff are exploring solutions, including experimenting with surfaces and drainage.
  • Multi-Cultural Centre (South Hagley Park) - now open in the former Christchurch Netball Centre building, with some netball courts allocated. Set up by the Multicultural Recreation and Community Centre Charitable Trust (MRCCCT) in partnership with the Council. The Council retains legal ownership of the property, while entrusting the MRCCCT with the operational running of the centre. https://mrcc.org.nz/about

Request for interested interviewees June 10-14th 2024- re AirBnB impact on inner city residents

We are planning a research visit to Christchurch to conduct interviews in early to mid-June. Could you please share information about our research project (attached) within your network?

The scope of our research includes collecting the experiences and opinions of inner-city residents regarding the quality, quantity, and diversity of residential accommodation and amenities in the city centre, as well as the implications of the shortterm visitor accommodation (e.g. AirBnB) on maintaining a vibrant urban environment. We are looking for 20 inner-city residents to interview.

Additionally, we are offering a small token of appreciation to the participants.
