The importance of whakawhanaungatanga

Mel Heaphy —

Whakawhanaungatanga is a core value of our kura, and we’re looking forward to the upcoming whānau events that live out this value!

Ki te kotahi te kākaho, ka whati; ki te kāpuia, e kore e whati.

If a reed stands alone, it can be broken; if it is in a group, it cannot.

When we stand alone we are vulnerable, but together we are unbreakable.

At Island Bay School, we believe that learning thrives in a whānau-based environment where relationships are nurtured, and everyone feels a sense of belonging. Whakawhanaungatanga is one of our core values, reflecting the importance of building strong connections between ākonga, kaiako, whānau, and the wider community. We learn and teach others in a Tuakana-Teina way, ensuring inclusivity and maintaining warm, positive relationships. We understand who we are as people, take pride in our whakapapa, and celebrate the differences within and between one another.

Whakawhanaungatanga is more than just relationships; it’s about fostering a sense of belonging, understanding, and mutual support.

Whakawhanaungatanga in Action

This week, we have seen this value in action in many ways. Our whānau hui brought families together to share kai, stories, and aspirations for our ākonga. Events like these strengthen our partnerships and remind us that learning happens best when we are connected.

We also appreciate the invaluable support of our parent helpers who contribute in classrooms, on trips, and during special events. Your involvement enriches the experiences of our students and reinforces the idea that we all play a role in their success.

Our Community Conversations continue to be a space where we listen, learn, and grow together. By engaging in open dialogue, we shape a school environment that reflects the diverse voices and perspectives within our community. Thank you to everyone who came along this morning!

Whānau Events

To create a space for informal connection, we have a series of whānau events coming up this term and next, where the aim is for our families to get to know each other in a low-key, relaxed setting (over kai!). See the images below for the details of your child's learning space whānau event. Big thanks to the Parent Links (a rep from each space) for pulling these events together, it's much appreciated!

Thank you for being part of our school whānau. Let’s continue working together to make Island Bay School a place where every child and every family feels supported, valued, and inspired.
